Stabilizers (Hydraulic)

Roll when underway is an unpleasant feeling on many motor yachts. The period of the waves at sea can coincide with the natural roll period of the vessel giving a magnified perception of the vessel’s movement. Stabilizers are an ideal solution for substantially reducing and dampening the wave induced motion causing seasickness and discomfort especially during periods of bad weather or heavy swells.

Stabilizers consist of a hydraulically actuated pair of fins fitted mid ships to the vessel on either side, operated either by the on board hydraulic system or a separately installed system powered by the main engine or generator. They are automatically controlled by a gyroscope reacting to the movement of the vessel which issues precise electronic control commands in order for the fins to adjust to counter the roll.

In smoother waters when the stabilizers are not in use the speed reduction is normally negligible and in higher seas can even help to increase speed as the reduced rolling maintains a lower wetted surface whilst underway.

Tate & Crewe Marine Ltd have installed Stabilisers in both slow and higher speed craft with results that have delighted their owners.

Installation is a substantial undertaking requiring careful and experienced survey of the craft before considering going ahead. If you are thinking of making this investment, please talk to us first.
